脳の混乱を示す行動ではなく、二つの言語を巧みに切り替えながら効果的にコミュニケーションを図ろうとするバイリンガル特有の高度な言語能力です。

 

先行研究の概要紹介

①日本語と英語を混ぜることは一般的な言語行動

バイリンガルは一つの会話や文章の中で二つの言語を交互に使用する場合があります。学術的には主に「code-switching（CS）」（コードの切り替え）と呼ばれ、二言語環境に置かれている子どもを含め、バイリンガルにとっては極めて一般的で自然な言語行動です（Brice and Anderson, 1999; Baker, 2001; Shin, 2018）。さらに、近年の言語学で注目されている「Translanguaging」（トランス・ランゲージング）という概念では、異なる言語間の境界線を超越し、複数の言語資源を巧みに使うことで効果的にコミュニケーションを図る能力として極めて肯定的に捉えられています（Wei, 2018）。

 

②二言語の知識による高度な言語能力

バイリンガルは、文法規則（例：文における語句の位置や順番、関係性など）を逸脱することなく（（Poplack, 1980）、両言語で知っている語彙についても、多様な理由・目的（例：話題や相手、状況など）でCSを行います（Raichlin, 2019）。また、乳幼児でさえ二言語を区別して使い分けられます（Genesee et al., 1995; Lanza, 1997）。よって、CSは二言語の混乱や両言語における文法・語彙知識不足を示すものではなく、バイリンガルの言語体系がモノリンガルとは異なることを示す一例であり、二言語の知識を活用したバイリンガル特有の高度な言語・コミュニケーション能力です（Wei, 2018; Shin, 2018）。

 

③言語障害の症状ではない

言語障害またはその可能性のあるバイリンガルの子どもも文法規則に従ってCSを行い、二言語の知識を活用して語彙を選択できることが明らかになっています（Brace & Anderson, 1999; Gutierrez-Clellen et al., 2009; Greene et al., 2012）。また、バイリンガルの大人が失語症から回復する過程にCSが見られ、その規則性は脳神経に異常のないバイリンガルと変わりがないことを示す研究結果も発表されています（Chengppa et al., 2004）。よって、CSは脳神経の異常有無を判断できる基準にはならず、言語障害と結びつけられるべきではありません。

 

④言語の切り替えが脳機能を高める可能性

近年は、バイリンガルが言語を切り替える仕組みが脳画像技術によって研究され始めました。例えば、バイリンガルが概念レベルにおいて二言語間で共有している語彙知識が言語の切り替えを容易にしていることを示す研究結果（Isel et al, 2009）や、二つの言語を制御しながら繰り返し切り替えることが脳の認知機能を高めることを示す研究結果（Abutalebi et al, 2012）が発表されています。このように、高度な認知力を必要とするCSは脳に良い影響を与える可能性もあります。
